  • Brand and type of sewing machine? I am looking to buy a sewing machine and would mainly use it for repairing ?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2009 and filed under singer sewing machine prices | 5 Comments »

seams or hemming pants. The heaviest use would be sewing torn seams in my son’s jeans. I am looking to spend 100 or 150. Costco carries Brother and Singer within these prices. Do you have a preference on the brand. Costco would also take it back if I don’t like it. I don’t need 100 different stitches or even a buttonhole maker. Please tell me your thoughts on what I should get? Thanks so much

What I want for beginners in sewing:

    - a machine that doesn’t scare you
    - a machine that isn’t balky (cheap new machines are often very
balky or need adjustments often and are rarely repairable –
just too frustrating to learn on!)
    - very good straight stitch
    - good zigzag (4-5 mm is fine, more than that is gravy)
    - a method of making buttonholes that makes sense to you
    - adjustable presser foot pressure (which helps some fabric
    handling issues)
    - accessory presser feet that don’t cost an arm and a leg
(machines that use a "short shank foot" typically handle
generic presser feet pretty well. Some brands of machines use
proprietary or very expensive presser feet)

If the budget stretches far enough:

    - blindhem and stretch blindhem stitches
    - triple zigzag (nice for elastic applications)
    - a couple of decorative stitches (you won’t use them nearly as
    much as you think)
    - electronic machine because of the needle position control and
because the stepper motors give you full "punching force" at
slow sewing speeds — mechanical machines often will stall at
    slow speeds.

Please go to the best sewing machine dealers around and ask them
to show you some machines in your price range, *especially* used
machines you can afford. You’ll get a far better machine buying
used than new, and a good dealer is worth their weight in sewing
machine needles when you get a machine problem — often they can
talk you through the problem over the phone. While you’re trying
things out, try a couple of machines (sewing only, not combo
sewing-embroidery) over your price limit, just so you can see
what the difference in stitch quality and ease of use might be.
You may find you want to go for the used Cadillac. Or you might
want the new basic Chevy. Might as well try both out.

Suggested reading: John Giordano’s The Sewing Machine Book
(especially for used machines), Carol Ahles’ Fine Machine Sewing
(especially the first and last few chapters) and Gale Grigg
Hazen’s Owner’s Guide to Sewing Machines, Sergers and Knitting
Machines. All of these are likely to be available at your public
    library.

Used brands I’d particularly look for: Elna, Bernina,
Viking/Husqvarna, Pfaff, Singer (pre 1970), Juki, Toyota

New "bargain brand" I’d probably pick: Janome (who also does
    Kenmore).

Can you back stitch on an old antique singer sewing machine?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2009 and filed under sewing machines singer | 3 Comments »

I have this really old singer sewing machine. Its like those really heavy black fancy ones. It doesn’t have a back stitch button and I read the manual and I didn’t find anything about it. Does anyone know an alternative or know how to? Thanks!

No back stitch. Just swivel the material around while the needle is still in it and stitch a few stitches to lock the stitching.

What does it take to become a singer or an actress?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2009 and filed under singer | 4 Comments »

I’m 14 years old and when Im older I want to move to California and become a singer and or actress because it has always been a dream of mine, I would also like to be a role model for younger girls what would it take?

It takes experience, training, looks and luck.

Better you should get established as an actor in a smaller place without so many unemployed actors. LA is wall to wall with them. Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, Miami and some other cities offer plenty of opportunity to get established as an actor.

Does any1 like the singer Akon????????

what does this song mean? something about it has me very curious?

    Rammstein-mutter
I think it’s about a test tube baby or the lead singer’s opinion against coloning but I’m probably wrong, some of the lyrics seems like it’s not in a litteral sense, just tell me what you think.
    p.s. it’s a little well…twisted..but that’s what got me though

The tears of a crowd of very old children
I string them on a white hair
I throw the wet chain into the air
and wish that I had a mother
    No sun shines for me
there was no breast that cried milk
there is a tube that sticks in my throat
I have no navel on my stomach
    Mother
I was not allowed to lick any nipples
and there was no fold to hide in
no one gave me a name
fathered in haste and without sperm
For the mother who never gave birth to me
    I have sworn tonight
I will send her a sickness
and afterwards make her sink in the river
    Mother
An eel lives in her lungs
    on my forehead, a birthmark
remove it with the kiss of a knife
even if it causes me to die
    Mother
    Oh give me strength

Yeah, I’d say cloning, with the "Mother" being "science". I guess the final verse makes more sense in German, but it could be that the "eel" is some sort of tattoo logo given to the character at birth.

Can someone help me with an old sewing machines?

appraisal for one of the original 1935 singer sewing machines. ?

it is all black, and has EVERYTHING. its in absolute perfect condition and looks brand new. its one of the original first ones ever made.

Sorry to disappoint you, its definitely not one of the first. Singer started making machines as early as the 19th century (1850) read more here

You might try asking the to evaluate your machine but raise NO HOPES, ITS NOT THAT SCARCE.

Do you think I could be a good singer even without knowing how to do the "voco vibrato"?

Posted by admin on September 27th, 2009 and filed under singer | 8 Comments »

I’ve noticed that almost all famous singers does the vibrato excellently. But I just don’t know how to do it. Well, I asked a question a week ago about how do they do it and they told me some nice detailed answers on how to practice it but I’m just wondering if I could be a good singer without it. Anyway, I’m a good actor for live stageplays in our school but I wanna learn how to do the vibrato to improve my theatrical performance. Anyway, if you think I could be a good singer without learning the vibrato, please gimme a tip on how to be a better singer.

If you have a nice tone and can stay on key, no. Usually, a nive vocal vibratto or falsetto makes your not sound more fluent and smooth, but not a lot of big names in singing have vibratto.

If you watch "Rent" (movie), notice how Anthony Rapp seems to have an absent of vibratto in some notes or songs he performs, yet his voice still sounds crisp and nice. That’s because he can keep a nice tone and balance.

You can try some vocal cord exercises to improve your voice. But, vibratto comes naturally. One day, I auditioned for my school play "Annie" and I decided to sing "Maybe". As I started to sing, I noticed my voice "shaking" as I used to call it. I sounded like a real singer. That’s because I practiced night and day, 24/7. I couldn’t stop singing!!

If you breathe in deeply, hold for 5 seconds, then out making a "ooo" or "aaa" or "sss" or just about any sound, it will help you keep in tone. Usually, I’ll do that for about 5 minutes at a time, then sing bits of a song I want to aim for. But, I’ll sing anywhere, really. I’m only 13, so I’m trying to improve my singing now so I’ll be able to climb to new heights later on.

Also eat healthy and keep fit and DON’T SMOKE. Smoking can really damage your vocal cords. If you do, try to stop before singing at an audition or play.

    Hope this all helps!
