  • Who out there knows anything about old sewing machines?

Posted by admin on August 26th, 2009 and filed under sale singer sewing machine | 4 Comments »

I was looking in my attic and I found this old sewing machine in mint condition. I was just wondering how much I could sell it for. It’s just missing the instruction manual. The vox it came in still looks nice as well.
I know this website below has some forn sale.
Any ideas on how to find out how much it is worth will help me so much.

The Singer 221 aka "Featherweight" are very popular machines with quilters because they are lightweight and easy to take to class. They only straight stitch, but they do it well. They are not rare, because there were a over a millon made from 1934 -1964. However, they are in demand and sell well. Value depends on condition and completeness. Most in good, working conditon sell between $200-$400 on ebay, a few special editions go higher. I would recommend you look on ebay to see ones in similar condition and with typical accessories. You could try to sell yours locally through craigslist or put up notices in local quilt shops.

You can get a replacement manuual at www.221parts.com. For more information about the featherweight, check out Graham Forsdyke’s site at www.singer-featherweight.com, including an online version of the manual and descriptions of attachments. You can also check the serial number on the bottom of the machine and see what year it was made.

If a garment is slightly damaged, do you repair it or discard it?

Posted by admin on August 22nd, 2009 and filed under sale singer sewing machine | 4 Comments »

I always find myself repairing clothing, towels, sheets, etc for my family and others. I picked up a 25 year old Singer sewing machine a few years ago. It is heavy metal, not like today’s plastic. It was made in the USA. It was $25 at a garage sale. I got them to take $20. It works great and I’ve learned to sew.
I’m surprised how few people know how to sew. With the economy being slow, maybe I’ll do a little business repairing clothing. It is far cheaper than getting replacements.

I repair of course! I have led Girl Scout troops for several years and was surprised at how many moms do not know how to sew a badge on their Brownie’s uniform!
Those little girls knew a bit about sewing before they left my troops.

how to thread up a bobbin into the machine?

Posted by admin on August 20th, 2009 and filed under sale singer sewing machine | 3 Comments »

ok idk if this makes sense and im new at sewing and im pretty wittless about it but i have an old singer sewing machine i got at a garage sale and im not sure how to like get the bobbin under the little palte and up into the needle or whatever so i can sew.

i used newer ones at school and you push a button and the bobbin bomes up in a little loop and u pull it and whal ah! u can sew but this older machine is confusing me! errrr any help please!!!!

Put the bobbin in with a little string coming out, turn the wheel to get the needle down then pull up slowly and you’ll see the bottom string. I use a pin and put it through the loop then pull it out.
I have an older sewing machine, too, and thats mainly how to do it.

Sewing machine question! Looking for a manual for a Singer Fashion Mate 252?

Posted by admin on August 18th, 2009 and filed under sale singer sewing machine | 2 Comments »

I am on a tight budget and cant afford to buy one. Is there a way to get one online? I have done a search but cant seem to come up with one for that particular model. Can anyone help me? I know I can go directly to singer, and there are other sites that make you pay, but like I said, im on a tight budget. I picked this up at a yard sale. Thanks so much in advance :)

The only thing I was able to find for free for your machine is a threading diagram at sewusa.com. (They also have the manual but it’s $10.)
    http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Singer_Sewing_Machine_Threading/singer_252_threading_diagram.htm
If finances loosen a little, you can download a manual from this site for $5.

    Good luck.

    sewing machine?

Posted by admin on August 16th, 2009 and filed under sale singer sewing machine | 5 Comments »

i got a singer 338 sewing machine from a garage sale and its got a lot of features but its old and it keeps getting knots and stuff, i want to get a new one that has a lot of features but isnt too expensive (at the most $100) thanks for all your help!!!

The "knots and stuff" are probably due to poor thread, a machine that needs cleaning, a needle that needs changing, misthreading, or improper sewing habits. You’ll probably have similar but worse issues with a new sub-$100 machine.

If you describe what your old machine is doing, we can probably help you figure out what’s wrong and what’s needed. Otherwise, the best information I know of on choosing a new machine is right here:
